Advice and Support for Producers
The Zoonoses National Conrol Programme (ZNCP) for Salmonella in pigs seeks to provide encouragement and incentives to the producer to improve their salmonella status. A ZNCP folder was sent to all units in May 2008 containing information on the new ZNCP scheme, a self-assessment form, action plan and serious about Salmonella booklet.
The self-assessment form should be completed by each pig unit and used as an aid to completing the action plan. The action plan should be reviewed regularly with the vet.
Free on-farm Salmonella visits are available at the discretion of the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA), Scottish Government Rural Directorate/SAC or DARDNI, numbers will be limited and you may have to wait until resouces are available. Please ask your vet to make the request to the local VLA laboratory, or alternatively, samples collected by your vet at your own expence, can be tested free of charge if agreement has been sought and the investigation protocol followed.
The incidence of positive results is now almost 4 times higher in England than in Scotland.
