Welcome to ZNCP
What is ZNCP for Salmonella in pigs? In June 2002 the British Pig Executive (BPEX) introduced the Zoonoses Action Plan (ZAP) Salmonella Monitoring Programme. ZAP was introduced following a report published in 2000, which indicated that a proportion of pigs arriving at abattoirs carried Salmonella and the risk of contaminating the meat was present. In April 2008 the ZAP scheme was replaced by the Zoonoses National Control Programme for Salmonella in pigs, to focus on a whole chain risk based approach to tackling Salmonella. Progress on reducing the risk to the consumer from Salmonella in pig meat will be monitored through measuring the prevalence on carcases in abattoirs.
Registering for access to your ZNCP services
The person who officially is the assurance member for a site whether an individual producer or a producer with more than one site (Corporate) can apply for access to their ZNCP information. Any other person or company (eg Vet, Corporate) can only access ZNCP information for a site if authorised in writing or online by the assurance member.
If you are a Producer and would like to access your ZNCP database information online please register your production site information. Every assurance membership will have to be registered individually.
If you are a Corporate Producer (i.e have more than one assurance membership registered to you) please contact the ZNCP team who can arrange initial access to all membership numbers sharing the same contact address. Access will be lost if the contact address for any membership changes in the future. Permission for access to information from other Assurance Memberships must be authorised in writing or online by the assurance member.
If you are a Veterinarian or other stakeholder and would like access to the system please click here Please note that producers will have to authorise you to have access to their ZNCP information if you are not the veterinarian who has completed the most recent quarterly assurance visit.
If you are an abattoir and require access to the sample system please click here.
About the scheme
So far the number of cases of Salmonella in people connected with pork or pork products has been very low and continues to fall. Nevertheless, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Defra made it clear that they expect action to reduce the prevalence of Salmonella in pigs. EU legislation will require all countries to introduce national Salmonella control programmes. ZNCP was introduced in order to safeguard and build on the image of British pig production, and to help ensure that any risk to our consumers, however small, is minimised.
On the basis of their rolling 12 month results producers are allocated a ZNCP % prevalence of total positive + suspect results, based on an ELISA antibody test.
ZNCP % prevalence is updated monthly and accessible online to vets and producers with password protected access. Reports are emailed to producers and vets at least every four months. All finishing units should have an action plan, irrespective of Salmonella prevalence, reviewed in detail annually with a need to show progress.
